The 1965-66 operating budget shows a near nine million dollar rise in teaching salaries and an average increase above a thousand dollars per faculty member. The budget book totals 21.6 million dollars, about 3.7 million more than the current year.
Sal onika protests erupt as pro-Communists clash with police amid anti US and anti Johnson slogans. Tech payrolls show top officials earning over 20 000 with nine month teaching loads and several deans adding teaching pay. President Goodwins 29000 includes 7100 from non state funds and 2400 housing and utilities.
President Johnson and Defense Secretary McNamara conferred for a fourth day on the Viet Nam crisis. They discussed a possible draft increase and callups, and McNamara joined Johnson at Camp David after earlier talks.
A World section reports Yugoslavia devalues its currency introducing a hard dinar and raises prices across sectors. Mexico prepares to convene an inter American meeting to set a 12 mile territorial waters limit.
In Saigon, Robert Kimball, Utah native and colleague of Jack E. Ryan, was arrested at dawn after a Friday night killing of Ryan and a Vietnamese woman. Police had issued pictures and questioned associates as part of a citywide manhunt.
Apasra Hongakula of Thailand won the Miss Universe crown in Miami Beach with 8,000 spectators watching. Virpi Miettinen of Finland was the runner up and Miss USA Sue Ann Downey placed third. Apasra planned to return home to Bangkok and attend secretarial school, saying she prayed to Buddha nightly.
Hale Center residents pledged to rebuild after a June 2 tornado tore through the town, damaging dozens of businesses and homes. Despite the wreckage and grief, volunteers cleared debris and organized efforts to restore the community.
The town, led by Mayor L. B. Dyer and figures like Tom Rambo and E. T. Harrison, plans extensive rebuilding with about 1.25 million dollars to restore schools and a church. SBA loans and FHA assistance are aiding the effort as the community works toward a brighter future.
Avalanches of storms lashed six states causing at least nine deaths. Colorado faced four inch cloudbursts with flooding near Golden and Bear Creek. In Birmingham and Kentucky towns, 8 inches of rain sparked flash floods and 70 families were displaced. A coal mine blaze near Morgantown West Virginia claimed the lives of Charles Garrett and Jess Hess who perished while helping evacuate 90 workers from the Arkwright mine owned by Christopher Coal Co. Their families faced the sorrow as officials noted the fire’s reach and the rescue team described the situation as escalating. Hess’s sons and father had prior mine fatalities, underscoring a tragic family history.
In Calcutta, three cars of the Assam mail train derailed near Mariani Junction Friday night. Police report eleven dead and forty seven injured, with rescue operations continuing.
