Hope Lost For Coal Miners In Blacksville No. 1
Nine miners trapped deep in Blacksville No. 1 mine in West Virginia were not saved after a methane gas explosion led Consolidation Coal Co to seal the mine. The blast injured none and 31 others escaped. Rescue efforts ended, and families were notified as air samples confirmed dangerous gas levels. The mine, 20 miles north of Farmington, employed 325 men and produced about one million tons annually for Detroit Edison.
