Former President Lyndon B. Johnson was hospitalized in San Antonio after chest pains and nausea following a second heart attack in April. A Brooke General Hospital spokesman said he was comfortable, in good spirits, and in satisfactory condition with stable heart rhythm and blood pressure. Johnson's daughter Luci Nugent went to St. David's Hospital in Austin for tests.
New York stock market prices rose sharply on Monday with the Dow Jones up 14.91 points to 935.56 the biggest one day gain since November. Analysts attributed the advance to favorable economic indicators and presidential actions ending a U S dock strike.
The Senate killed a 1.8 billion foreign military aid bill after rejecting an antiwar amendment linking troop withdrawals in Indochina to the Paris prisoner release. Supporters led by Mansfield and Fulbright lost key votes as Republicans and Democrats abandoned the measure. House action remains pending as Senate plans a possible new bid.
South Vietnamese paratroopers attacked the Quang Tri Citadel as North Vietnamese forces poured fire into two breached wall holes. By nightfall the battle remained indecisive with fighting near the walls and snipers in ruins.
