Northern Vietnam battles escalate with village burnings

Heavy fighting hits a string of northern villages and camps in South Vietnam. Viet Cong attacked Phu Dau near Da Nang burning 200 houses leaving about 1000 homeless while U S Marines faced mortar barrages. At Loc Ninh near the Cambodian border U S Special Forces and Green Berets battled 200 Communist troops. one American soldier was killed and another wounded. B52 raids targeted Loc Ninh as U S troops reinforced. Red Beach near Da Nang suffered rocket fire with unclear damage. Casualties reported as very light to high with no full assessment.

Texas Court Affirms Pittman Death Sentence

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled Pittman’s 1966 murder conviction and death sentence valid despite a Supreme Court ruling on conscientious scruples against the death penalty. Cleveland unrest blamed on Negro militants and plots

Stokes said a small and determined band of Negro militants caused bloodshed halted by rain and 4,000 guards. He linked Cleveland strife to a supposed plot to ignite disorders in Detroit Chicago and Pittsburgh. Police reported snipers among nine killed and warned of wider trouble while curfews were not imposed.

Nationalists Anti Social Beat Drums In Cleveland Shootout

Residents on Cleveland’s East Side described a house scene where a small, determined group of African American nationalists engaged in drum beating and confrontation after a night of sniper fire. Evans, a self styled black nationalist leader, fled the scene and later claimed to surrender after his rifle jammed during a police confrontation near Lake View Road.
