United Press International reports two American jets were shot down over North Vietnam on Wednesday with seven crewmen missing. Marines said over 920 Communist troops were killed in a major Leatherneck operation near the DMZ as another battalion joined the fight.
President Johnson said the United States is ready to discuss prisoners of war with North Vietnam under Red Cross sponsorship and Geneva conventions. He warned Hanoi against threats to treat airmen as war criminals and stressed the need to persist with troop support and bombing decisions. The 5th Circuit upheld the death verdict for James Lee Marion, a fry cook convicted of beating Mrs. Fred Turner to death in Lubbock in 1963.
