Continental Airlines began checking carry on luggage and then installed metal detectors at airports including Lubbock Regional. Passengers pass between two poles for screening and staff say the public welcomed the move despite potential long term irritation.
AFL-CIO President George Meany said the federation will not vote for either Nixon or McGovern. The executive council backed the stance as McGovern hoped union support would grow. Some unions endorsed McGovern while a few conservative groups leaned toward Nixon amid labor split. See McGovern on page 14.

Gov. George C. Wallace underwent a second operation to drain an abdominal infection from a gunshot wound. Dr. George Hallenbeck and George H. Traugh reported he tolerated the procedure well and was doing fine. the operation lasted under an hour in Birmingham.
In Washington the House defeated a 5 billion public works measure 189 to 206 amid claims it would fuel inflation in sewer work. Appropriations Chairman Mahon opposed the bill as inflationary while Nixon’s antibusing bill moved forward without the education funding requested.
North Vietnamese reinforcements failed in two assaults to drive 1,500 government paratroopers from Quang Tri city, with at least 198 killed. Allied troops held the city as 31 Communist soldiers died nearby. U S B52 bombers dropped over 900 tons on suspected NVA positions around the area.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that accused murderers, rapists, and armed robbers cannot be denied bail while awaiting trial. It said the U.S. Supreme Court ruling against the death penalty removed the sole legal basis to withhold bonds and ordered a Houston judge to set bonds for two men in a gangland style killing and related attempted murder case. The defendants, PeteAnthony Contella Jr. and Larry Lee McDougal, had been held without bond for an Aug. 14 trial over Roy H. Clements, 19.
