Massive heavens census under way at Palomar and Mt Wilson
A giant celestial inventory begun in 1951 at Mt Wilson and Palomar aims to count galaxies and clusters across the western sky. The six volume catalogue will hold about 40,000 galaxies and 10,000 clusters, with 99 galaxies and around 200 clusters mapped in the current installment. Researchers led by Fritz Zwicky and Emil Herzog anticipate the work will reveal large scale matter distribution and sky coverage beyond the Milky Way. The effort combines Palomar survey plates with National Geographic backing and NSF funding, with global observatories set to access the data.
