27 Indicted in $1 Billion Southern California Bookmaking Ring
A Los Angeles grand jury indicted 27 people on charges they operated a $1 billion yearly bookmaking ring based in Southern California. Foreman Myron J. Carr Jr. said the syndicate was led by T. Three year old John Barron Smith was killed when struck by a car on 19th Street near Salem Avenue. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Mark Smith and grandson of former Texas lieutenant governor John Lee Smith. The Morton driver Ernest O Willingham 49 headed west in the curb lane and struck the boy 11 feet from the curb at about 5 35 p m.
