Rodney Palmer, 13, son of Mr and Mrs I B Palmer, won the Class A crown and defeated Cary Cox of Idalou in the boss race at the 15th annual Soap Box Derby on a hill at Amarillo Highway. The Lubbock Avalanche Journal Modern Chevrolet and the Exchange Club sponsored the event with 15,000 spectators. Palmer earns a gold trophy a gold ring a $500 savings bond and a trip to Akron for the All-America Derby.
