Doctor Denies Thalidomide Market Amid Birth Defect Concerns

Soap Box Derby Draws 12 000 In Lubbock Tonight

About 12 000 people are expected for the 15th Lubbock Soap Box Derby at 7 p m on N Ave H and Erskine Rd track. John Denton, 1961 winner, will drive last year’s car to start this year’s race. Hitchhiker and Girl Sought After Slaying in Kansas

A Wakeeney police officer and a Trego County sheriff were shot during questioning of a young hitchhiker and his 17 year old girlfriend. The pair identified as Harry Blummer 24 and Shirley Nixon 17 fled east of town after the ambush of Sheriff Chet McAtee and officer Al Claycamp. The search involved airplanes and police dogs near Wakeeney, Kansas.

Gunn to Succeed Hess at Reese Air Force Base Change

Col. James A. Gunn will assume command of Reese Air Force Base today, replacing Col. L. C. Hess who has led since August 17, 1959. Brig. Gen. J. A. Hilger will attend the ceremonies and a flyover will honor the base. Hess and his family depart Monday for Okinawa to lead the 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing.

Change of command at Sheppard AFB signals new era

The commander served until April 17, 1956, retiring and being replaced by Col. Cross Ellis. Hess assumed command August 17, 1959, with the Sheppard AFB Band to play at the change ceremonies. Col and Mrs Hess attended several farewell events this month hosted by Reese officers and Lub bock civic leaders. Gunn, a Kelseyville native, is noted in RAFB rites.

Two Injured By Pampa Twister

A farm couple, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Jones, were listed in serious condition at Highland General Hospital in Pampa after a twister struck their mobile home about 8 p.m. The funnel rolled the trailer three times into a nearby residence where the Jones daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Babcock, were present but uninjured. The storm brought heavy rain and no other wind damage was reported.
