Salary of Office Nears Savings for County Purchases

Lubbock County's six month pilot of a purchasing agent system shows sizable taxpayer savings totaling 22,367.29 in purchases with an actual reduction of 5,751.26 versus last year. Gasoline saw about 86.9 percent savings while letterhead overprinting dropped 203 percent. Envelopes and diesel oil also posted large cuts under the contract, per Crutcher's preliminary report to the board of district judges.

Driver Charged After Beer Seizure Upheld by Court

A civil suit in 99th District Court upheld the seizure of a truck carrying 395 cases of beer by Liquor Control Board inspectors near Hale Center on July 12. The driver, John W. McWhorter of Lubbock, was arrested for illegal transportation of intoxicating beverages, and the board seeks revocation of the consignee L. R. McAteer’s beer selling license.

Latin American Shot At Dance Hall Tragedy

A dance event on Avenue P ended in violence when a gunman fired into the crowd, wounding 26 year old Latin American Joe Jiminez in the arms and chest. He remains hospitalized in serious condition.
