Thunderstorms and tornadoes strike West Texas towns

Severe storms lashed Borger Crane and Big Spring with two ground twisters and hurricane force winds up to 95 mph. Borger reported $75,000 in damages including planes and a demolished Civil Air Patrol building. Lubbock saw 98 degree heat drop to 71 as rain flooded terminals and caused a traffic accident.

United Press International reports the Senate Finance Committee voted 10 to 5 to strike the administration’s proposal to withhold taxes on dividends and interest. The move halts the plan for now though a floor fight is anticipated to restore it in the tax revision bill. The panel approved tighter reporting rules requiring notices of dividends and interest over 10 dollars, with penalties to be added.

Power use record shocks Lubbock as temps soar

Lubbock residents set an all time 24 hour power use record as temperatures reached 97 degrees. Exceeding one million kilowatts, city and utility totals topped previous highs with 2 203 800 kWh and 1 003 800 kWh respectively. Water use also peaked with 37 446 000 gallons Monday and 33 332 000 Tuesday.

Scotland Yard sought international help after burglars stole 35 Impressionist works from Jacques O'Hana's private gallery. Temporary Doctors Sought by Saskatchewan Government

Saskatchewan’s Socialist government called for 200 British physicians to temporary practice amid a strike by province doctors against a compulsory medical care plan. Fire guts drugstore district in Spur causing major damage

A spectacular mid afternoon fire swept a Spur drugstore and nearby shops in the downtown business block. The City Drug Store was a total loss with merchandise and fixtures destroyed. Two minor burns were reported as unidentified spectators vanished into the crowd. Firefighters from Cropsyton Post and Dickens aided Spur’s volunteers, bringing the blaze under control in under an hour and dousing it within two hours.
