U S and South Vietnamese Navy boats patrol the Saigon River and tributaries as ground troops and war planes push to disrupt forces near Saigon. Girl Killed as Navy Jet Crashes Into Glenview Home

A Navy Skyhawk crashed near a Glenview residence after takeoff from Glenview Naval Air Station. A 13 year old girl, Cynthia Masters, died in the blaze. Pilot Lt William Reinders ejected and survived with injuries. he was hospitalized in satisfactory condition. The home and garage were destroyed.

Johnson Enjoys Festive Tour in El Salvador With Salvadorean Leaders

President Johnson and Mrs. Johnson mixed with Salvadorean crowds in church markets schools and a canyon park during a busy Sunday. They attended a church service opened a rural school television course and enjoyed a barbecue as El Salvador’s president Fidel Sanchez Hernandez hosted. The visit included speeches and a reciprocal reception for the visiting leaders from Costa Rica Guatemala Honduras and Nicaragua. The Johnsons planned to return to the United States after guiding the other presidents home on a circular 1050 mile detour.

Thunderstorm Dumps Heavy Rain Across Lubbock Area

A severe storm system brought heavy rainfall up to two inches north of Lubbock with hail and strong winds. Roads flooded on multiple highways and water crossings, while lightning illuminated the South Plains. Officials noted standing water and brief travel disruptions but no widespread injuries. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast for the region later today.

France conducts first Pacific atomic test at Mururoa

France announced a medium power atomic device explosion at Mururoa atoll in the South Pacific. The test began a July August series aimed at culminating with France’s first hydrogen bomb. A notice warned vessels and aircraft to stay 500 nautical miles away while plans included plutonium and enriched uranium warhead testing for ground to ground and submarine missiles.

Texas DPS Counts 38 Fourth of July Traffic Deaths

The Texas Department of Public Safety reports 38 traffic fatalities statewide as the Fourth of July holiday ends.
