Bartow Florida: Charlie Smith the nation’s oldest Social Security recipient at 126 says he has no secrets. Abandoned in Liberia at 12 he was sold as a slave to Captain Smith before becoming a cowboy in Galveston and later moving to Florida. He arrived in New Orleans after capture. He recalls the Spanish American War era and a citrus job in his106th year. He maintains he simply lives and has no secrets.

Alec Rose, a 59 year old vegetable dealer, sailed 28 500 miles in a 320 day solo voyage aboard the ketch Lively Lady. A thundery rain pattern hit the western South Plains on July Fourth. Lubbock posted a third straight record low maximum temperature as scattered showers dropped 1.25 inches in Seminole and Denver City and half an inch in Andrews.
