Lubbock Placemats Promote City Brand at Restaurants

Lubbock leaders plan display of placemats in selected restaurants later this month to promote the city as progressive and inviting to new business. The Texas Restaurant Association Lubbock Chapter will designate a day for the mats showing an aerial skyline image and a message that Lubbock is building economic development and welcomes investment.

Woman 65 Chooses Death Over New Home Move

A 65 year old woman Golden Sparks of 211 Uvalde Ave died from a self inflicted gunshot wound after reportedly resisting relocation by Urban Renewal Agency. She left a two page letter to the agency expressing discontent with the demolition of her home. Suspect Williams Found Guilty of Murder in Lubbock

A Lubbock County jury found Claude ll Williams 28 guilty of murder with malice in a two day trial at the courthouse. The verdict came as the courtroom emptied and punishment will be assessed after a 9 am hearing. Williams had been jailed since his arrest the same day Joseph Moore a 63 year old nightwatchman was beaten to death near the Lubbock Cotton Oil Mill on 17th Street and Avenue A. Witnesses testified Williams fled the mill grounds when questioned by detectives and was captured after a foot chase near the Santa Fe terminal.

Rampage at Muslim Home Kills Five

Police said five people were shot dead and three children drowned in a Washington home linked to the Haifa Muslims sect. The scene, formerly owned by Kareem Abdul Jabbar, was sealed as investigators probed the killings and injuries at 16th and Juneper streets in the northwest.

Ex-Tech Professor Pate Killed in Wichita Plane Crash

Dr. Robert Thomas Pate 41 former assistant professor at Texas Tech died in a single engine plane crash on takeoff from a private airport near Wichita early Thursday. He previously chaired Wichita State University Elementary Education and was en route to Parsons to work with the Read a program. The crash occurred at 6 20 a m and the wreckage found after dawn in a field northeast of the airport. An investigation continued.
