Washington AP notes unemployment fell to 7.9 percent in December the first drop in three months with a signal of higher grocery prices ahead. Wholesale farm and food prices surged nine tenths of a percent led by coffee up 11.5 percent, while industrial prices slowed and a one time natural gas rebate offset recent steel hikes.

Longet testifies in manslaughter trial over Sabich death

Dispute Over Dog Merits Cited In Shooting Trial
In the aggravated assault trial of Jose Guadalupe Salinas 25 witnesses described a visit to Marion Albert Alejandro’s apartment that ended with a shooting. Alejandro testified that Salinas argued and used force after a dog was slapped by Salinas and that Salinas produced a pistol and fired. His wife Dolores corroborated the dog incident as provocation for the confrontation.

Burglary Conviction Deliberation Brief
A jury in Judge William Shaver's 140th District Court found Fernando Olivas guilty of burglary after a 27 minute deliberation. The 29 year old from Midland was convicted for the July 10 break in at 124 Temple Ave belonging to Larry D. Grant. Jurors recessed to await sentencing as Olivas and attorney Frank King requested a punishment hearing. A television and clothes were taken. police stopped Olivas for a missing rear license plate on Clovis Road. Grant identified the TV in Olivas car as stolen from the apartment.

Man Charged In Robbery at Carriage House Inn
Robert Lee Avery, 25, surrendered to police after a Monday night shotgun holdup at the Carriage House Inn on Slaton Highway. He faces aggravated robbery charges for entering with a double barreled shotgun and a white mask, forcing an employee to hand over two bank bags with about 70 dollars in cash and a 10 dollar check. Two customers reportedly lost small amounts of cash as well.
