U S Representative George Mahon who has represented the district for 40 years will be saluted today at 7 p m by the Lubbook Chamber of Commerce Board of City Development in Minnlespel Calidelim O Mahon and Mrs Mahon will be honored in speeches by Lubbock civic leaders Chas A Guy former Avalanche Journal editor will speak Guy backed a Lubbock man in a 1933 six man race Mahon has chaired the House Appropriations Committee for 10 years and its subcommittee on military expenditures for 25 years He proposed in 1954 an 8 5 million Missouri River water study He is a conservative on domestic issues and sometimes takes liberal foreign positions He grew up in Louisiana worked in Abilene to pay for Simmons Hardin Simmons College and UT Law He practiced law in Colorado City served as county and district attorney and ran for Congress in 1933 Dr Hardy Clemons and Bob Nash will also speak and serve as master of ceremonies
