Stores Aid in Removing Flammable Rag Dolls

Reward Fund Grows In Slay Probe For Gary Owens Case

Public efforts to catch the killer of Gary and Owens continue with the reward now near 3000 dollars. A tip phone is being installed and detectives pursue remote leads while reporting no breakthroughs. Ray Chapman, trustee, says about 2000 dollars have been donated on Wednesday, including a 1000 dollar anonymous gift, with roughly 500 previously contributed.

Reward Committee Forms In Wake Of Motel Beating Death

A local committee formed Tuesday night to emphasize the brutality of a motel beating death and to aid police with a reward fund. Owens, a Texas Tech senior from San Angelo, died after four days in Methodist Hospital. He was found in a pool of blood around 5 am Friday at Holiday Inn South where he worked. The beating occurred during a $50 robbery at the motel. The committee adopted the slogan Some body Knows and set up a dedicated phone line for tips.

Warming Texas Temperatures Rise After Frosty Spell

A new warm spell spread across Texas on Wednesday lifting temps into the mid 50s in the South Plains while Lubbock reached 57 after a 19 degree overnight. Forecasters warned of another front lowering temps again by Friday with no rainfall expected on the South Plains. Elsewhere snow hit the Puget Sound region and drifted into Idaho and Montana while a southern cold snap brought snow to Wyoming Colorado and from the Great Lakes to New England.

Mansfield urges 17th Parallel barrier to halt Vietnam infiltra tion

Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield proposes a defensive wall along the 17th Parallel and extending south along Laos and Cambodia to reduce North Vietnamese infiltration. He says the barrier could allow scaling back other operations and may cost about 4 billion dollars, while not insisting on an immediate end to bombing.

Mary Garden Dies in Obscurity at Age 92 in Aberdeen

Opera star Mary Garden died in Aberdeen aged about 89 to 92. Once acclaimed across continents and named most outstanding interpretive artist in 1950, she spent her final years in Scotland, returning from a vibrant career abroad. A Christmas card from America hung over her bed, a Kennedy drawing reproduced above. She had been courted by princes and Debussy, and her Chicago years saw her as both executive and star.

Domestic cutback seen as Mansfield predicts Johnson limit agenda

Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield predicted President Johnson will curb new proposals and focus the new Congress on modifying existing Great Society programs. He said Johnson plans to trim domestic spending by 3.5 billion dollars this year and that Congress should oversee existing laws and carry out their intent.
