Man Charged With Murder In Slaying At Caldwell Gin
Pedro Portillo, 27, faces murder with malice charges for the Friday killing of Jorge Martinez, 17, at Caldwell Gin near New Deal. Portillo, reported in fair condition at Methodist Hospital, allegedly struck Martinez with an axe during a money dispute, then was hit by a pickup driven by Hibpood of Rt-2, Lubbock, while fleeing. Martinez died from a back-of-head wound in a barracks-like room where all three lived with Martinez's brother Carlos, 24. Witness Don Freeman, gun manager, said he retrieved the axe as the fight ended and Portillo walked away before the collision. Police continue investigations into the events surrounding the fatal incident.

The body of George Jones a 24 year old Amarillo resident was found in a creek in Walnut Hills northwest of the city. Jones who had lived in Corpus Christi was identified by his mother Mrs Paul Jones.
