T-37 Trainer Crashes Near Ropesville Killing Two RAFB Pilots
Two Reese Air Force Base instructors, Capt. William Price and 1st Lt. Ralph Fabian, died when their T-37 trainer crashed at Reese Field near Ropesville eight miles west of Lubbock. The jet, taking off brief seconds earlier, plunged belly-down into the runway, bursting into flames and igniting surrounding grass as firefighters battled the blaze.

90 Day Trial Run Ordered By City Of Lubbock
Lubbock city council moved quickly to begin the first phase of a new action program in downtown as parking meters are to be removed for a 90 day trial starting March 15. The move followed the Springer Report from the Lubbock Development Corp. and includes chalk marks on tires and tickets to promote traffic turnover. The council also approved selling 4.7 million dollars in bonds and awarded a sewer extension contract.

25 Degrees Cold Wave Hits the Valley
A late winter cold wave chilled Texas with 25 degrees in the Lower Rio Grande Valley causing damage to potatoes onions tomatoes peppers and melons. Frost was forecast for today and another cold night followed by mild conditions elsewhere as five deaths from winter weather in the South Plains melted away. Citrus appeared spared in the valley though growers expect severe losses in the south.

Educational Bill Passes Creates Texas Higher Education Board
The Texas Legislature approved an 18 member central board to coordinate higher education. The bill passed the Senate 27 to 3 and the House 141 to 4, placing junior colleges under the new board and expanding control over course and degree additions. Governor Connally praised the broad support and the educators who framed the plan. The session also extended time to push a teacher pay raise plan and approved a resolution backing Connally against a federal youth wage rule.
