Edward Maguire, a 17 year veteran, is set for enforced discharge and loss of pension rights after weighing 52 pounds over his prescribed limit. He stands 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 225 pounds, according to AP Wirephoto.
Two former Juarez mayors Carlos Villareal and Victor Manuel Ortiz were killed after a political dispute at a Mint cafe. Politician Clemente Licon Baca was critically wounded as gunfire erupted between rival figures, with police detaining Olivera Castel to prevent reprisals.
A series of accidents across the nation claimed numerous young lives. Four sisters drowned after thin ice broke in Babylon New York, and five others died in two car crashes in Indiana and South Dakota. Additional fatalities occurred in Florida Missouri New York and elsewhere as a fire and a highway crash claimed teens and adults.
A Lubbock couple and their baby escaped a two room home fire early Sunday. The house filled with smoke forcing them to flee through a window. They are staying with relatives while flames destroyed the residence and belongings.
Police captured documents revealing a three day Communist plan to murder and disrupt Venezuela to cancel Betancourt's trip to the United States. Officials said a Friday roundup of alleged Communists targeted Interior Minister Perez Justice Minister Landaez and Defense Minister Linares. Betancourt was to travel to the U S on February 18. The plan included blowing power lines sabotaging substations and attacking U S firms and oil properties in Zulia to show the state unable to protect investments.

George W. Ball undersecretary of state urged Americans to accept the administration’s Cuba assessment and stop talking about the issue. He said Kennedy is determined to defend U.S. vital interests and that Cuba does not now pose an offensive threat.
