A rash of severe thunderstorms swept north Texas with tornadoes hail and heavy rain causing heavy property damage and at least five deaths. Gainesville saw its worst flood since 1957 forcing 200 residents to flee and drowning a city monkey cage.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey began a hastily arranged trip to Southeast Asia aimed at promoting a social and political program in Vietnam. He rode a U S Air Force jet from Honolulu with Vietnamese leaders and U S officials to discuss military and non military efforts, following a three day Honolulu conference with President Johnson. The trip includes planned stops in Bangkok and Australia, with a focus on reaffirming U S partnership in peace and progress.
A three judge federal panel ruled Texas poll tax unconstitutional effective immediately, sparking doubt about a 1966 registration and possible call for a special session by Governor Connally. Sophie Tucker, renowned as the Last of the Red Hot Mamas, died at age 78 in her Manhattan home after a hospital stay for intestinal inflammation and four months of chronic lung and kidney issues. Tucker, famed for touring worldwide, last performed publicly at the Latin Quarter.
In Santo Domingo a Dominican mob set fire to a policeman during a confrontation with police and U N peacekeepers. At least seven people died and 43 were injured as riots raged after anti American demonstrations near the National Palace.
