Fire damages cables cutting phone links near Abernathy
A grass fire north of Abernathy damaged four telephone cables and two poles cutting 347 circuits and 24 teletype carriers along the Lubbock to Amarillo line. About 40 circuits remained out as a 20 man crew restored service with rerouting via Oklahoma City and through Sweetwater and Dallas.

Tank Mishap Four Hurt By Fumes In Aiken
Four Plainview residents were hospitalized after escaping fumes from an anhydrous ammonia tank at a fertilizer plant near Plainview. The tank hose reportedly came loose while Byron Ford filled the tank, fumes drifting to a nearby cafe where the four patrons were drinking coffee. Fire crews used gas masks to stop the leak at 7 26 p.m. No others were affected.

Crash Fatal To Woman Near New Home
Mrs. Howard G. Smith of Rt. 4 Lubbock was killed when her auto and Jack Rogers 66 of Tahoka driven pickup collided near New Home in Lynn County. Rogers was treated and released. Smith’s husband at Methodist Hospital remained in critical condition. The dog in the truck died. investigators said Rogers drove into his driveway as the crash occurred. Funeral plans were unsettled at White Funeral Home in Tahoka.
