Traffic of male applicants entering the Lubbock United States Employment Service office rose about 68 percent since January 9 announcement of cooperative planning with Selective Service. December 1944 saw 1 198 men seeking information or help. 257 referred to local jobs with 167 in essential industries. January 1945 results show 324 men sent to local jobs with 197 in essential industries and 186 hired by outside-area war industries, all within or near Lubbock.
Maj. G Curtis E LeMay piloted the first B-29 to land on the Marianas airstrip but four enlisted men led the way in the liberator Maximum Goose, Cpl. Charles E Houser Allentown Pa Pfc James Bray Philadelphia Pfc Joseph Fobb Bennington Okla Choctaw Indian and Mike Menton Scurry Tex were guests of honor representing the negro and white aviation engineering battalions. Sugar beet production in Northwest Texas will be discussed Friday at Texas Technological College. Lubbock county agent Jason O. Gordon will preside as the event, sponsored by Tech plant industry department and the Lubbock county extension service, welcomes farmers and civic leaders.
