Dunbar clinches a share of the District AAA title as LeBrock High defeats Caprock. The edition also notes a public school concert in Lubbock and a Senate confirmation of William J. Driver to run the veterans program by a 75 to 7 vote.
The Texas legislature early Tuesday backed Gov. John Connally's program. The House approved 143 to 2 an emergency appropriations bill for 702,785 dollars, and the Senate unanimously urged Congress to call a constitutional convention to allow non population based apportionment. The session also passed a bill to set procedures for library services and organizing a state plan to access 2.5 million dollars in federal library funds, advancing to the governor.
Senate investigator testified Reynolds kept nine bank accounts but could not locate the source of a 25 000 payment to Bobby Baker as a political payoff. Edward T Hugler said only 10 500 in cash could be turned over to Baker, while Reynolds described the 25 000 as a campaign contribution. The Rules Committee chair said the inquiry is closed with Reynolds' testimony about the cash tied to a district stadium project.
The Joint Name Change Committee meets in Austin and Lubbock to discuss Gov Connallys trisuper system for state colleges. Delegates from about 100 students join a Student Council session to air the issue as lawmakers prepare higher education appropriations bills.
A bus bound for a country fair overturned and fell into a 300 foot ravine near Zacatecas Mexico killing 20 people and injuring 40 as police investigated the Tuesday accident.
At Amarillo, a Santa Fe Railway request to end passenger service between Amarillo and Lubbock prompted a one day Texas Railroad Commission hearing. Labor representatives voiced concerns for workers while Santa Fe officials testified the train runs deficits and may be discontinued. A decision is pending Cecil Boulden's review and later commission action.
Edwards AFB California reports the X-15 reaching a speed of 3 886 miles per hour during a test flight.
Police linked two fatalities to a snowball clash near the University of Tennessee after a snowfall. Freshman Marnell Goodman, 18, Swampscott MA, was fatally shot by an irate truck driver. Walter Lee Yow, 54, died after injuries from the incident. Roland Lawson, 58, died of a heart attack soon after his car was struck by snowballs. Officer Harris said the deaths are a direct result of the same fight. A Guilty plea not yet offered. driver William Willett Jr., 27, Greeneville, charged with second degree murder. University President Holt ordered an investigation and warned of disciplinary action.
Chicago private Paul Carl Meyer, 25, indicted by a federal grand jury on four counts for delivering 15 State Department passports to Soviet representatives in East Berlin. Prosecutors say Meyer used a prospecting project ruse to obtain and solicit passports from 15 individuals, who were not charged. Meyer remanded to U.S. marshals pending a hearing.
Atty Gen designate Nicholas Katzenbach announces charges against Meyer for using and possessing passports unlawfully. Each count carries up to five years and a 2006 fine. Meyer, a Chicago native with Ecuador years and a brief U S Army service, faces multiple counts including misusing a passport abroad.
McGeorge Bundy leads a team to Saigon for a fact finding mission on Vietnam policy. He will confer with Ambassador Maxwell D. Taylor and report back this week as U.S. concerns grow over Buddhist influence and Saigon instability. The White House stresses the trip is to reassess military and political conditions for President Johnson.
In a fiery Commons session, Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s government survived a Conservative bid to topple it by 17 votes. The 206 to 289 loss sparked shouting matches as Douglas-Home pressed for resignation while Wilson defended his policy record and pressed for public support.
Lubbock and surrounding counties report a 940 million dollar total in bank deposits at the start of 1965, up from 1963. Regional cities Pecos Clarify end year records show Levelland Floydada and Olton also posting all time highs in deposits across multiple banks.
