England's Forces Preparing To Leave Island Of Malta
London APBritain orders its forces to prepare for departure from Malta after Mintoffs ojection to the terms of the 1964 defense pact. If withdrawal proceeds 3,500 military personnel plus 7,000 dependents would leave the island, affecting 5,000 direct and 1,500 indirect Maltese jobs and a 33.8 million annual expenditure by British service families. Negotiations over interim and new defense arrangements have stalled amid Mintoffs demands.
