A sharp cold front swept into the South Plains from the Panhandle bringing freezing drizzle and snow flurries. Temperatures are expected to stay in the 20s to mid 30s with roads iced in places and officials warning of a continued cold spell through Thursday. Snow fell from the Rockies into New Mexico with amounts ranging up to four inches in Goodland and smaller amounts elsewhere.

Fort Worth lawyer and Navy veteran John B. Connally Jr. was selected by President-elect Kennedy on Tuesday night as secretary of the Navy. Connally, 43, long an ally of Lyndon Johnson, served in nine Pacific battles, earned the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit, and later represented Sid Richardson and Perry Bass.
