Record Christmas traffic toll climbs to past five hundred

Goodfellows Toys and Candy Distributed in One Morning

About 400 Goodfellows workers handed out Christmas gifts to roughly 11,000 needy Lubbock youngsters in under two hours on Saturday. Donations neared $10,000 after last minute gifts. Gifts were given to families directly to ensure receipt. Recipients were 14 years old or younger. A screening committee of teachers and ministers identified need.

A fast moving Christmas storm swept the Midwest and Great Lakes causing widespread ice and snow. Power outages affected hundreds as rain and freezing rain iced roads from Michigan to Ohio and western New York. Large downtown Lubbock fire under arson suspicion

Eddie Holland of a sign company could not be reached for comment as fire damage continued.

Johnson daughter Luci Nugent engagement in Yemen visit

President Johnson's youngest daughter Luci Nugent and Airman Patrick Nugent announced their engagement Christmas Eve. The couple met in Milwaukee and planned a summer wedding. The couple and Luci's visit to the Nugent family occurred amid a Yemen peace pledge and a pause in fighting.

Normal Fighting Resumed in Vietnam War After Brief Cease Fire

Six Perish as Cable Car Plunges at French Peak

At Lermont Ferrand France a cable car carrying fifty four people including many teens crashed into a concrete pylon after a 93 mph gust. Six died and fourteen were injured as rescuers reached the site on Puy de Sancy. Snow and wind hampered the effort.
