Holiday weekend traffic deaths surged past 500 with 506 killed in crashes by Saturday, raising fears of the worst three day Christmastide highway toll. California led states with 42 deaths. Oregon reported the worst single incident with 12 dead in Rouge River crash.
About 400 Goodfellows workers handed out Christmas gifts to roughly 11,000 needy Lubbock youngsters in under two hours on Saturday. Donations neared $10,000 after last minute gifts. Gifts were given to families directly to ensure receipt. Recipients were 14 years old or younger. A screening committee of teachers and ministers identified need.
A fast moving Christmas storm swept the Midwest and Great Lakes causing widespread ice and snow. Power outages affected hundreds as rain and freezing rain iced roads from Michigan to Ohio and western New York. Chicago and Detroit faced outages and drifting snow while emergency crews repaired lines. Ski areas closed and Donner Pass blocked as snow piled high in the Sierras.

The first blaze at about 9 am caused heavy losses to a tire company owner Glen Woody who reported around 26000 dollars in tires and equipment lost. Sanders Funeral Homes noted coffin crates valued at about 800 dollars after coffins were moved from the building last Tuesday. Eddie Holland of a sign company could not be reached for comment as fire damage continued.
President Johnson's youngest daughter Luci Nugent and Airman Patrick Nugent announced their engagement Christmas Eve. The couple met in Milwaukee and planned a summer wedding. The couple and Luci's visit to the Nugent family occurred amid a Yemen peace pledge and a pause in fighting.
A U S military spokesman said Viet Cong violated the Christmas cease-fire, resuming heavy fighting near Chu Lai and elsewhere. He noted 84 Viet Cong initiated incidents since Saturday and that the 30 hour and self-declared 12 hour truces were not observed. See WIDESPREAD Page 12.
At Lermont Ferrand France a cable car carrying fifty four people including many teens crashed into a concrete pylon after a 93 mph gust. Six died and fourteen were injured as rescuers reached the site on Puy de Sancy. Snow and wind hampered the effort.
Local forecast notes fair conditions tonight with warmer daytime highs around 64 to 68 degrees. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph. tonight low near 30s, record high and low values listed for the period.
