The incident raises the city’s traffic fatalities to 24 for the year.

Police used tear gas Friday to disperse about 2,000 Southern University students and other Negroes marching on the East Baton Rouge parish courthouse. Forty eight Negroes and one white were arrested near the jail with charges not disclosed. Separate gas actions targeted a garden near Huey P. Long's burial site as about 150 protesters sought the state Capitol. The event lasted about two hours and ended with buses returning marchers to the university.
The Lafayette National Bank in Brooklyn is robbed by a two man gang with a submachine gun. A guard, Henry A. Kraus, is killed and Patrolman Accardi narrowly escapes as the duo flees with about $35,000, leaving $10,000 scattered on the floor. A lone customer escapes during the raid and helps alert police.
Two Virginia men told questioners a wild tale of 11 murders from Virginia through Illinois but admitted two only. Joseph Riddick, 24, and William Potts, 17, both Black, signed statements saying they were involved in the Portsmouth Virginia truck driver killing and a Lunenburg Virginia cab driver killing, while other claims were to confuse investigators.
