Paris report describes a new book about Charles de Gaulle for children. The 78 year old president is depicted as charming yet vain and possibly tyrannical, with scenes of him sewing stars on his cap and wearing a clown suit.
A pretrial hearing for Benjamin Lach, charged with the scalpel slaying of Mrs. Sarah Morgan on the Texas Tech campus, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday in 99th District Court. Judge Howard Davison and Dist. Atty. Alton Griffin said the proceedings may include a sanity hearing, and Lach will be represented by court-appointed defense lawyers Bill Gillespie and A. W. Salyars after F Lee Bailey did not represent him.
Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black says freedom of speech does not shield unlawful conduct and that the right to assembly does not extend to another man’s property. In a CBS interview he criticizes the phrase desegregation with all deliberate speed and emphasizes bounds of constitutional rights.

Dent’s Thurmond link drew attention, though he denied a quid pro quo. Thurmond said he asked for nothing in return. DuBridge, 67, will leave as California Institute of Technology president to lead peacetime scientific research efforts.
Witnesses at the Senate antitrust subcommittee urged reforms in auto repairs. Prof. William N. Leonard blamed manufacturers for shifting focus from service to sales and called the industry a jungle for consumers. Sen. Hart backed state licensing of repair shops to protect buyers. Glenn F. Kriegel urged separating inspection from repair and noted a shortage of qualified mechanics.
National Airlines Boeing 727 refueled under a hijacker's waving gun at Key West then flew to Havana with 28 passengers and seven crew. Cuban authorities allowed takeoff within three hours after landing in Havana. The jet and crew returned to Miami that night. Passengers were to be bused to Varadero for a charter flight home Wednesday. Cant James W. Sims piloted the landing at 10:27 p.m. from a New York to Miami schedule.
Lt Gov Robert Finch of California has been offered the post of secretary of Health Education and Welfare in the Nixon cabinet and is expected to accept. Nixon sources confirmed the HEW job was available to Finch, a long time Nixon associate and manager of his 1960 campaign.
The Texas College Coordinating Board voted 14 to 1 to authorize Tech to seek a campus medical school from the Legislature in 1969. Location would be on the Lubbock campus with support from Amarillo Midland and Odessa hospitals for internships. If authorized, construction and staff would push first students possibly into 1975.
A youth writer recalls the Goodfellows of Lubbock delivering a generous Christmas for underprivileged children, with letters and coupons pouring in to Chief Goodfellow. The anonymous group coordinates gifts, candy, fruit, nuts and toys since 1935, anticipating a heavy year ahead to reach every needy child.
The Watson family at 4403 27th St. showcase a manger scene using nylon net and chicken wire in the 22nd annual Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Home Christmas Lighting Contest. Exterior doorway and window entries total 50 in multiple divisions with angels, stars, and salvaged flash-cube parts decorating the display.
