JEDD BLESSING notes barbed wire as a historic West tool still useful today while three Floyd County residents Mae Smitherman Glen Black and Charles Overstreet pursue a hobby of collecting 300 plus varieties. Violence erupts as roving mobs of Negro youths attack cars and stores near Illinois 42 in Auregan. Police arrest at least 52, with 28 charged with disorderly conduct. Among the injured are five critically burned, including a 6-year-old girl. most victims Puerto Rican families.

A Levelland boy 7, Roddy Ayers, died at Methodist Hospital Lubbock after a two car crash six miles south of Smyer at Farm Roads 168 and 1584. His 5 year old brother Alan was in serious condition. Their father Jack Ayers 30 drove the car involved with Eugene Wilson 64 of Olton. The collision knocked both boys from the car. Funeral plans were pending. Survivors include parents and grandparents.
Three days of activities kick off as 21 entrants compete in the South Plains Maid Of Cotton event. Nancy Bernard, last year's winner and 1966 national Maid, attends a buffet dinner at Lubbock Country Club with congratulations from Gov. Connally and Sen. Blanchard. Judges and guests gather at Municipal Airport for arrival as the field prepares for judging, TV appearances, and dances.
