Four In Family Die Near Pecos
A Dallas insurance man and three of his children were killed in a highway collision near Pecos Texas. A tire blowout in a heavier car caused swerving into a small foreign car driven by James H McCaffrey 49 of Dallas. McCaffrey and his sons Tommy 18 and Stephen 14 died at the scene. His daughter Eileen 19 died later at a hospital. Two others in the family and three men from out of state were injured.

R E Stone Dies in Brownfield Crop-Dusting Crash
Robert E. Stone a 26 year old Brownfield resident was killed when his crop-dusting plane struck power lines near Brownfield south of town and burned. He had been married 12 days. The crash occurred about 5 p.m. on a field near Highway 137. Stone worked for Harris Flying Service and was making his first run in the field at the time.

Fire Fighters Near Victory At Donner Ridge Fire
Airborne crews closed the last gaps in lines near Lake Tahoe as Sierra blaze crews battled to finish a 75,000 acre timber fire. Forestry officials planned a salvage operation to save up to $6 million in burned timber. The firefight saw its first fatality when 31 year old William K Powers of Springfield California died from carbon monoxide inhalation while operating a radio in a truck at Donner Ridge north of the lake.

First South Plains cotton bale harvested at Crosbyton gin
The first bale of 1960 cotton from the South Plains was delivered to the Crosbyton Farm Co op Gin on Thursday harvested by Higginbotham from a dryland farm south of Crosbyton. The bale weighed about 1600 pounds of seed cotton yielding roughly 400 pounds of lint. The area harvest is expected to quicken in September with an estimated crop of 1.899 million bales, second only to 1958.
