U S forces redeploy jets and recon aircraft to bolster South Korea as North Korea threat grows. The UN General Assembly considers a resolution to end foreign military involvement in Korea.
Roy Neeley agricultural officer with the U S Mission in mainland China told the U S Feed Grains Council that China should harvest about 280 million metric tons of grain this year, roughly the same as last year, and that unless conditions worsen the chances of grain trading this year are remote. He noted stocks of about 40 million metric tons and that exports were sharply reduced last year, with Poland East Germany and Romania cut off from Chinese trade once more. See GRAIN IMPORTS Page 14.
President Ford plans head to head debates with James Carter to shrink the Democratic lead. White House aide Richard Cheney says beating Carter in a televised duel is the best way to boost Ford’s campaign. Ford announced the debating idea in his Republican National Convention acceptance speech and has been discussing formats with aides.
A board of elected officials debated and approved continued funding for the Hale project after a contentious public hearing. Clifton led the unit overseeing the policy, while concerns about control and ongoing grant support were raised by attendees.
Mostly clear air and comfortable temperatures expected for the next two days as area schoolchildren head into their last weekend without homework. Temperatures should reach the upper 80s today and Sunday with winds at 10 to 15 mph.
