Ford declared readiness to debate issues face to face with Carter, accepting the GOP nomination after a close contest with Reagan. Reagan and his wife acknowledged the victor from the platform as Ford addressed the nation about the electoral race and public questions ahead.
Texas House Speaker Bill Clayton praised private enterprise during the Sales Executive Association awards in Lubbock. The event named Travis D. Shelton executive of the year amid remarks on economic prosperity and government encroachment concerns.
A Plainview grand jury will investigate charges against Bennie Clifton and the Hale Narcotics Unit after a heated City Hall meeting. Lloyd Woods urged the probe to “clear air” while Clifton faces accusations of harassment and mismanagement.
Plains Ga AP Jimmy Carter accepted Ford challenge to a debate and urged discussion of choices facing Americans. Ford defended a vision of limited government and opportunity, stressing a record of specifics and appealing to non Republicans to support renewal.
Crosbyton hosts the 100th anniversary of Crosby County and the 50th West Texas Pioneers and Old Settlers Reunion. Descendants of Uncle Hank Smith receive the Smith family award at 1:30 pm as part of a day of regalia and historic honors. Morning events include 9 am registration led by local volunteers.
Reuben John Escobedo was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the May 1975 bank robbery at Lubbock National. The District Attorney sought life imprisonment for a crime described as heinous involving a 14 hour terror and the kidnapping of three A. L. Wilson family members. The jury found him sane at the time after a high speed chase and deliberated about an hour before the verdict.
Representative Foley spoke at the annual Feed Grains Council meeting at the Innish Sant. He said the outcome depends on what can be done or not and urged guidance on next steps.
A loosely formed wedge of thunderstorms moved east over the South Plains late Thursday bringing moisture to about six central and western area cities. A Lubbock weather office spokesman cited warm aloft temperatures as the reason long lived clouds did not form. Cooler temperatures at sunset caused the storms to dissipate. Crosbyton reported the heaviest rainfall with about one inch.
