Hurricane Near Carolina Coast Prompts Evacuations

Two 20 year old Post residents James Dooley and an unidentified companion flew to Big Spring in a Piper Cub Friday. After failing to return a search by air and ground spread across Post area until they arrived by bus. Local residents had feared they were killed. Bob Penn of Post denied involvement.

Forest Fire Near San Diego Threatens New Outbreaks
A major fire east of San Diego threatened new outbreaks on three fronts. In Modoc county an 8,000 acre blaze near the Oregon border was curtailed. A 5,600 acre brush fire near Fresno was active but diminishing. The four day San Diego fire had devastated 20 homes and 60,000 acres of watershed and wooded areas in Cleveland National Forest and Cuay maca state park.

High Court May Get Clovis Liquor Issue
Clovis in New Mexico may see its liquor local option case reach the state supreme court after District Judge E. T. Hensley Jr dismissed a wets petition for a recount of the August 8 local option election. Official returns show packaged liquor rejected by 75 votes 2788 to 2713. A wet spokesman said an appeal decision will be made Friday.

Abernathy man fined 600 dollars in liquor case
Carl Blakely, 51, admitted producing rye whiskey for 3 cents a pint and selling it for 3 dollars. He was fined 600 dollars and costs after pleading guilty to a liquor violation during a raid that uncovered a five piece still in a one room shack on Fourth street. About 50 gallons of rye mash and four gallons of rye whiskey were seized. Deputy supervisor Leon Bowman said this was the first still found in the region. Blakely said he used Dr Pepper to color the whiskey.

Plans To Name Queens For Fair Boosted Entries Open
About 120 young women from 17 South Plains cities submitted entries to name two queens for the Mid-Century South Plains fair on Oct 27.
