Detroit Ties Tight Security to Curb Teen Gangs

Detroit police began a renewed crackdown after a Sunday night riot at Cobo Hall. About 5,310 officers were on duty, nearing normal strength, with a 10 p.m. curfew for those under 18. Six youths refused to leave a roller rink, a fireman was stabbed, and several people were detained during the downtown incidents.

Ontario teen sets new world swing record in 170 hour effort

Jeff Lucas a 13 year old from Smithville Ontario swung for 170 hours to set a Guinness World Record surpassing the prior mark by 50 hours. He passed the old record at midnight Saturday and finished Monday night aided by a special backrest and brief nightly rests supervised by manager Tom Acton and his mother Elaine.

Paraplegic Rider Seeks Million Dollar Cure Fund

Paraplegic rider Bob Gill tours the nation seeking donations for the National Paraplegia Foundation to speed a spinal cord injury cure. In Lubbock he claimed about half a million dollars raised, but the group later reported under $2,000 in receipts and spent about $2,500 on the trip.

Daylight Robberies Probe With Minimal Leads

Two daytime robberies yielded little cash and few leads. A 1 PM robbery at Ham's Food Mart on 34th Street and Elgin Avenue netted a small amount. Earlier, Lester Johnson was robbed of $11 by two white men near 1302 62nd Street. witnesses described the suspects and a partial license plate starting BK.

Urban Renewal Agency to Repair Widow's Home at No Cost

The Urban Renewal Agency commissioners voted to rehabilitate a disabled 73 year old East Lubbock widow's home with no cost to her. Repairs estimated at 5700 will meet city code standards and make the house livable. The board also sold two parcels and authorized eminent domain for another parcel. James Stewart won weed mowing contracts for 50 and 450 lots with low bids of 145 and 1049.50 respectively.

FBI Chief Clarence Kelley Recovers After Back Surgery

FBI Director Clarence M Kelley was progressing nicely at Menorah Medical Center after back surgery to relieve nerve pressure from a slipped vertebra. He was admitted Sunday and officials could not say how long his hospital stay would last.
