Agnew Denies Payoff Guilt

Police raced to locate a seven year old boy named Larry who cried for help over a Citizens Band radio as he and his father hunted rabbits. Officials said the boy reported the pickup overturned and his father dead while they searched southeast of Albuquerque toward Mountainair with National Guard planes assisting.

Five Bodies Uncovered In Houston

A 17 year old led police to a shallow grave in southwest Houston uncovering four bodies and a skeleton. Police identify three victims as David Hilligiest missing since May 5 1971 Charles Cary Cobble and Marty Ray Jones last seen July 25. The youth says he killed Dean Allen Corl 33 of Pasadena after Corll allegedly handcuffed him and two others during a party at Corlls home. The youth says the group passed out after sniffing spray paint and he killed Corll when threatened. See BODIES Page 12.

New Projects Studied By Tour Group

Lubbock has $110 million in public facilities projects, funded by $55 million local bonds and $57 million from federal and state sources. City planners briefed three city boards and staff to show how land use decisions shape growth, noting Loop 289 and Texas Tech are not included.

Storms Spawn Funnel Clouds Across West Texas

Storms swept across West Texas producing funnel clouds in the Panhandle and near the Gulf Coast. No damage was reported from funnel clouds or hail though two funnels were sighted eight miles northwest of Groom and another over Amarillo. A tornado east of Borger caused no injuries or damage.

Fire damages Friona School in West Texas

Friona elementary school housing third and fourth grades suffered heavy damage Wednesday afternoon when a heating room fire spread to a library and classroom. Fire Chief Ralph Shirley reported three pumper units on scene about 6 15 p.m. and the blaze under control an hour and a half later. Superintendent Alton Farr said the library was the most damaged, about half the books destroyed, with extensive smoke damage to the rest of the building. He anticipated students not returning until after August 27 and planned watchmen to guard the 10 year old building. no arson suspected.

Decline In Serious Crime Noted In Hub City By FBI

FBI data show Lubbock among seven Texas cities with declines in serious crimes. Texas overall saw fewer violent crimes per 100000 people despite a slight rise in total offenses. Murder and non-negligent manslaughter rates dropped, while property crime edged down.
