Washington With two names dominating speculation Senator George McGovern says he will announce his running mate within a few days after canceling a nationally broadcast speech. Leading contenders to replace Thomas Eagleton include Frank Church Edmund Muskie Lawrence O'Brien and R Sargent Shriver. Edward Kennedy is reportedly McGovern's first choice though he previously declined.
Senator Thomas F Eagleton disclosed he briefly considered a Nixon style appeal to salvage his place on the ticket but rejected the idea. He said he met with George McGovern, accepted the resignation, and returned to his Senate duties relaxed and confident in McGovern’s campaign three months before the election.
Kennedy declines job as running mate remains possible. McGovern plans Eagleton discussion on TV but cancels hours before air. Networks cite equal time issues if a new running mate is named. Jack Anderson retracts drunken arrest claim. Frances Farenthold touted as replacement amid mixed political reactions. This marks the first ever withdrawal after nomination in a major party. Eight member hijack group including three children sought asylum in Algeria after seizing a Delta Airlines jet from Florida to Algiers. Ransom neared one million dollars. U S officials in Algiers expect the money to be returned. Algerian airport sources say money likely seized. Hijackers were questioned at Dar el Beida and moved into the city. The Delta DC8 had 86 passengers disembark in Miami and later proceeded to Algiers. Page 19.
