Area tech student faculty women of the year named at an annual banquet in Lubbock Tuesday night. The feature highlights the campus recognition and plans for the year ahead.
Canadian air surged into Texas bringing showers to the Panhandle and South Plains and a light frost risk in the Panhandle by dawn. Rain totals were light with spots reporting .20 inch and frost possible as temperatures slipped to around 30 degrees.
A car driven by a 71 year old man lurched from a parking space and struck fourteen people on Ocean Front Walk in Venice. William L. Lieberman, in his sixties, was critically injured and taken to Santa Monica Hospital. Police identified the driver as Nathan Hundret, 73, of West Los Angeles, who said he shifted from reverse to forward gear while attempting to back out.
The Texas House approved a constitutional amendment to repeal the poll tax 113 to 26 after two failures. An annual voter registration rider remained, spurring Rep. Carl Parker to oppose. Parker failed to suspend rules to remove it. If Senate approves, the measure heads to voters in November 1966.
A Texas Senate committee advances HB 33 on double contracting in real estate, with questions about false instruments and liability for financial statements. Debate focuses on wording to require a new statute while avoiding conference committee entanglements.
Wards AFB Calif A Ryan Aeronautical test pilot W L Lou Everett 42 father of four died when his XV 5A vertical takeoff plane dived into a dry lake bed during a public flight. Everett ejected but parachute failed. The crowd watched as the craft crashed after rising to 800 feet and a hover before reversing to jet power.
Oklahoma voters reject a one cent sales tax increase and two bond issues in a statewide special election. About 400000 voters opposed the tax, contributing to the defeat of $60 million for highways and $56.75 million for colleges mental hospitals and other state facilities.
The Mississippi River rose to crest levels Tuesday impacting Clinton Iowa to Fulton Illinois and flooding the Quad Cities region. Thousands of volunteers worked to contain rising waters as the river surged across the area causing widespread disruption.
Mississippi floodwaters surge through the Quad Cities with Davenport Bettendorf and Rock Island-area dikes under strain. Army engineers say flood crest near 22.5 feet in the Quad-Cities as 3 000 residents flee homes in Iowa and Illinois. Evacuations continue and sandbagging efforts intensify to protect industries and housing.
President Johnson outlined three U. S. Viet Nam aims to seek a peaceful settlement resist aggression and avoid a wider war. He pledged continued bombing until aggression ends and reaffirmed unconditional talks with any government at any time. He warned defeat would threaten U. S. welfare and freedom and intensify the danger. The speech stressed firmness as the only path to lasting peace and kept the peace offer open despite past rejection.
Patrolman Charles Austin Pryor 25 was killed when his THP car collided with a bobtail truck on U S 87 twenty six miles north of Marillo Texas. Driver Tom Cain 18 and passengers Bill McGuire 26 and Dan Pool 24 were listed in critical condition at Northwest Texas Hospital.
Washington bureau report says Rep. George Mahon seeks Agriculture Committee hearings on skip row changes affecting cotton with 50 acre allotments. Mahon warns reduced support price and higher costs risk disaster and vows strong protest, urging farmers to file objections by May.
