The Associated Press report notes Dwight D. Eisenhower scoring a decisive win in Colorado and building delegate strength in later states. Taft appears to gain in Utah and Arizona through observed delegate gains as results filter in, shaping the contest.
In Massachusetts on Tuesday the first head on clash between top GOP contenders since Nebraska. Kansas sent a 16 member delegation to the national convention, designated to vote as a unit, while Democrats acted Saturday.
Virginia Republicans picked two delegates with A D Smith of Newport News leaning Taft giving him four of six. Colorado supporters said two delegates favor Kerr of Oklahoma with Millikin backing Taft. Utah’s 14 delegates swung to Taft. Arizona’s 14 delegates were mostly Taft while Eisenhower won 15 of 18 delegates in the state. Taft led seven of district delegates and one Taft in the 10 at large. Eisenhower opposed.
Dimmitt high school teams earned three top honors at the 25th annual Texas Tech Seasonal Agriculture Judging Contests with 221 entries from many areas. Poultry and dairy cattle judged, with notable achievements by students and coaches.
Senator Ellender of Louisiana urged Congress to end the Defense Production Act arguing the President seeks to extend it to empower labor leaders. He criticized the Wage Stabilization Board for overreach and linked it to the steel seizure while saying the act should die when its June 30 expiration arrives. He warned the inflation fight is not the aim, but expanding labor power.
In Quito on April 26 violence erupted between backers of presidential candidate Jose Maria Velasco Tharra and opponents described as firing squads. Police said Guillermo Alarcon, ex-minister in President Gato Plaza’s cabinet and National Democratic Balance leader, was shot in the back and among the wounded.
The House Labor Committee plans hearings starting May 6 to probe the Wage Stabilization Board and possible violations of national labor policy in the steel controversy. A 14 year old California boy Norman Brown loses left arm and leg after a hitchhiking trip with friends ends in an accident near Slaton Texas. Slaton residents rally to aid the injured youth and his family with housing and support as his hospitalization at Mercy Hospital continues.
A boy suffered severe injuries when a boxcar switch moved while he was crawling under cars near Slaton. Doctors recommended immediate amputation to save his life. His father, visiting from the West Coast, learned locals had been taking turns staying with him to keep him from being alone.
The Lubbock Weather Bureau forecast shows a slight chance of scattered afternoon and nighttime thunder showers over the South Plains today and Monday. Temperatures may rise to the low 80s, with Saturday reaching 77, as clear skies and mild temperatures contrast with ongoing East Texas flood warnings.
Partly cloudy today and tonight with a few widely scattered afternoon and early night thunder showers. Temperatures remain steady with a low around 48 degrees and a high near 82. Precipitation and low temperatures expected over the 24 hours ending at midnight last night.
Grace Marie Olliff, 20, remains critically injured after a head on collision. Her Brooklyn brothers John 27 and Ben 23 and father William 51, all Jehovah's Witnesses, guard her hospital room to block a transfusion despite a court injunction.
The Coast Guard reported an American freighter, Cape Martin, and the Portuguese freighter Monte Brazil collided off Atlantic City. The Cape Martin crew said they were all right while the Monte Brazil crew took to life boats. The incident was reported to the Little Egg station.
ASHINGTON April 26 The Korea truce talks reached a showdown stage this weekend with officials warning a breakdown is possible but hoping to avoid it. Gen Ridgway and UN commanders were directed to decide if the Reds are willing to pay a price for a truce. The Sunday meeting was cancelled but urgency remained to break the deadlock. State and Defense officials viewed the chance of a saved truce as slight and noted earlier optimism has faded.
A Moore’s Bonded patrolman Waldo Keith says he was beaten by eight or nine persons he believes are college students after investigating campus thefts at Texas Tech. Five typewriters worth 695 dollars were stolen Friday night from campus buildings. Three freshmen aged 20, 20, and 21 are under disciplinary review.
Martin Dies enters the race for Congressman at Large from Texas joining four others in the statewide campaign. Edwin O. Nimitz, a first-term Orange legislator, and Pierce Brooks of Dallas also announced bids. Texas gains an extra seat after the 1950 census, with only two candidates having paid filing fees.
Two separate accidents near Snyder Saturday evening left one man dead and several injured. Jeff George Brisendine of Abilene died in a side swipe on the Roby highway around 4 p.m. Jimmie Davis of Sweetwater, critically injured, was injured when his car overturned near Gail on the Lamesa Highway about 6:30 p.m. Davis’s wife and Alvin Davis were also hurt.

John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers plans to confer with General Dwight D. Eisenhower when Ike returns to the United States to learn his labor views. A meeting has not yet been arranged and will await Eisenhower's return.

The White House announced renewed efforts to settle the railroad wage dispute that led to government seizure of carriers in August 1950. Acting defense mobilizer Steelman held extended talks with railroad management and three operating brotherhoods to seek a basis for returning the lines to private operation.
