Seminole crash claims young driver and injures four

A collision nine miles west of Seminole between a car and a 1959 tanker truck killed Jimmy Doyle Daugherty 23 of Seminole and injured a mother and her three children. April Kay Neilson 16 her mother 36 and Roselle 4% Neilson were hospitalized at Gaines County Memorial Hospital. Services for Daugherty were set for 2 p m at Seminole Memorial Chapel with burial in Converse Louisiana. Local arrangements were handled by Seminole Memorial Chapel.

Tragic Alabama boat sinking claims nine lives near Tennessee river

In Scottsboro Alabama a leaky fishing boat on the Tennessee River backwaters sank after midnight killing Violet Caves 37 and six of her children. Charles Caves 18 and his brother Jimmy survived after reaching safety. Roosevelt High School graduates in partially completed gym

In spring 1936 Roosevelt High School graduated 27 students in a gym built on buckets and planks before the new Roosevelt Consolidated District facility was ready. About 300 alumni gathered for a reunion recalling early consolidation challenges and the effort to finish the gym for graduation.

Avalanche-Journal Home Show closes after week of displays

A closing night crowd of about 7 190 attended the ninth annual Avalanche Journal Home Show and Trade Exposition at Municipal Coliseum. The week long event drew roughly 38 000 visitors with 600 registrations handed out in the first five minutes of the final presentation. Home Show management praised the eight participating merchants for their high quality displays.

Staten Island Brush Fire Ravages 10 Square Miles

Brush fires swept across 10 square miles of Staten Island from an offshore wind, destroying more than 100 homes and buildings. Firefighters fought the blaze as the city reported the worst fire in Staten Island history with dozens treated for injuries. One person died and two were seriously burned in Oklahoma gas well incidents, where a 60 foot derrick collapsed and flames reached storage tanks.
