Lubbock ISD may adopt a four quarter plan under a 1971 law requiring a quarter system with option for four. Supt Ed Tryons says demand could justify four quarters though takers unknown. Summer enrollment included 5827 students with 893 in regular high school academics and 156 in junior high academics.
Robin Kral of Dawson County won the 26th annual Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Regional Spelling Bee at Smylie Williamson Junior High. He spelled indigenous and abysmal to clinch victory, earning a trip to Washington for the National Bee. Kyle Ward of Cochran County and Jim Bob Byrd of Hobbs advanced deep before elimination.
