President Johnson plans a two day informal trip to Mexico City to join First Lady Lady Bird Johnson and Dean Rusk in unveiling a bronze Standing Lincoln statue gifted to Mexico. The visit aims at a private dialogue between Johnson and Mexican President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, with no business discussions planned.
The Italian luxury liner Michelangelo, 44 000 tons, struck by a powerful North Atlantic storm two American passengers died and 11 were injured. Victims were J Steinbach age 58 of Chicago and Werner Brendt. Two other passengers and seven crew members were bruised. The ship, two days from New York, faced eight hours of storm before conditions eased.

Lt Col Melvin Owens said 25 to 30 Viet Cong were involved with 82 mm mortars used. security was largely U S and South Vietnamese.
Fort Worth voters approve a measure allowing the city council to condemn and assemble blighted areas for public use or private redevelopment under a redevelopment program. Mayor Willard Barr says the decision shows the American way as citizens speak for themselves and unite to work for the city.
In White Plains New York a court admitted voiceprint evidence for the first time in a trial against George Strable of New Rochelle. Lawrence Kersta of Bell Labs testified that nine spoken words extracted from wiretap tapes matched Strable’s known speech, claiming 97 percent accuracy across over 50 000 voiceprints. The defense objected to the technique as unproven while Judge Robert Dempsey ruled the method admissible.
Turbulent weather drenched Central Texas with heavy rains gale winds and large hail. A tornado sighting was reported near Mansfield Dam as a severe thunderstorm watch covered large areas.
The United States reports a KA3B tanker from the Philippines to the South Vietnam theater is overdue without confirming loss. Peking says a Chinese air force A3B variant shot down the aircraft near Suichow Peninsular in Kwangtung, with crew details unspecified.
