U.S. Reaffirms Vietnam Peace Bid Amid Global Denunciations

U S officials stood firm on President Johnson’s conditional peace talks while Soviet and Chinese media condemned the offer. George W Ball said the United States will keep its South Vietnam commitment even if China or the Soviet Union intervene and will leave the offer on the table pending Hanoi’s reply. He noted no formal rejection from North Vietnam and awaited Hanoi’s position to the 17-nation peace appeal with no preconditions.

Johnson signs vast education aid bill at childhood school

President Johnson signed the largest education aid bill to date in a ceremony at a one room country school. Attended by his former teacher and childhood classmates, the event highlighted the $1.3 billion increase aimed at aiding needy students and teacher training.

Raborn Named New CIA Chief by Johnson

President Johnson selected William F. Raborn Jr., 59, retired vice admiral who helped develop the Polaris missile, to head the Central Intelligence Agency replacing John A. McCone. 54 Die As Syrian Charter Airliner Crashes

A chartered Jordanian twin engine airliner exploded and crashed into a mountainside 13 miles west of Damascus killing 54 people including King Hussein's personal pilot.
