Carr pledges key votes to seek Texas House speaker post

WAGGONER CARR of Lubbock has 81 pledge cards from House members, surpassing the 76 needed to be elected speaker for the 55th Texas Legislature. He is touring during the Easter recess with pledges from all regions. if chosen, he would be the first West Texas speaker since 1927.

Mahon Plans New Cotton Bill

Burglar Foiled by Wrong Car in City Break-In

A burglar tried to break into Ohlenbusch Service Station on 19th Street and Avenue F Saturday night. He jumped into a car occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Shivers Abernathy, then fled when a squad car arrived after a glass break was heard. No entry was made.

Infant Atomic Device Exploded In Yucca Flat Test

The United Press reports a small atomic blast at Yucca Flat predawn Saturday, seen as a brief flash across four Western states. The test occurred from a 300-foot tower as part of a scheduled doubleheader with a second device postponed by the Atomic Energy Commission.

Officials plan a spring test of a tornado like device in the South Plains with advance two to four hour alerts for residents.
