City Council Incumbents Lose In San Antonio
Incumbent officials faced defeats as the Good Government League backed nine council candidates with eight winning in San Antonio. John Gatti, a 52 year old investment banker, leads a runoff for the ninth seat while the mayor is elected by the council. Gatti claims commitments from five of nine GGL council winners. Turnout exceeded 114,000 with Gatti totaling 71,760 votes. The GGL carried several Negro precincts and lost only a few Mexican American districts. In Crystal City the La Raza Unida Party expanded control by winning all five council seats. Mayor Francisco Benavides re elected. Alan, Gomez and Talimante won first terms. Other cities saw varied results and runoffs, including Dallas where a runoff is set between Avery Mays and Wes Wise.
