Bridgeport Conn Sept 30 three men killed and two injured in a head on collision of freight trains on the Berkshire division of the New York New Haven and Hartford road on Long Hill at dawn. The dead include Engineer Burns Fireman Gustafson and Brakeman Naly. sanhi cause traced to oversights by Engineer Holt who ran an extra southbound train past Stepney. The wreck blocks traffic and is described as one of Berkshire division's worst.
George Cutting, a Fitchburg sewing machine agent, and Miss Josie Dominique drove a horse through Clinton, pursued by police for two miles as a crowd gathered. The man faced cruelty to animals and drunkenness charges, while the woman was released on a court promise.

Milwaukee, Sept. 29. General MacArthur said the disaster to Company C of the Ninth Infantry is one of those deplorable isolated incidents linked to the insurrection led by Gen. Lubkan. He believed sufficient troops would ultimately quell the rebellion in Samar and noted details were too meager to discuss. The dispatch holds all available information at present.

Courtland Kansas September 30 ceremonies marked the unveiling of a state erected monument at the site where Lieut Zebelon H Pike hauled down the Spanish flag and raised the Stars and Stripes for the first time in Kansas territory during early battles.
Five workers were badly scalded in a Kerr Thread mill blast in Fall River this morning. The incident occurred at Kerr Thread Works and authorities reported the accident as a serious workplace incident with several injured.
Atlanta Ga Sept 30 The Confederate Soldiers home burned today but no lives were lost. There were many narrow escapes as seventy invalid veterans were rescued with difficulty. The loss is 2000 dollars. The home had opened only in June and was built by popular subscription.

A sentry guarding the McKinley tomb near West Lawn cemetery in Canton reports being attacked by two men amid a knife assault and a diverted shot. Private DePrend, a New York recruit, was cut on the overcoat but not the flesh as the assailants fled. 70 soldiers guard the vault and camp while authorities investigate the incident.
Durban reports a 1500 strong Boer force led by Gen. Botha attacked Portitala on Saturday. The assault ended with heavy garrison losses: one officer and eleven men killed, five officers and thirty men wounded, and 63 missing. Boer commander Op perman and nineteen burghers are confirmed dead.

Fall River on Stafford road. Lloyd B. Brown 72 confronts a masked armed burglar in his store guarded home. The intruder escapes after Brown fires twice, one shot through his coat. Brown is praised for his brave stand and narrow escape.
Beginning October 1, 1901, trains will depart Lowell for Nashua each hour until 11.50 am and every half hour from 12.50 pm until 7.60 pm, with departures at 8.50, 9.50 and 10.50 pm.
The police court hears the case against Cornelius Desmond and ten others charged with aiding and advising an illegal boxing contest tied to the Aug. 15 Dionne Armstrong bout at Knickerbocker club. Witnesses describe ring conduct, referee actions, and a fatal fall as the trial proceeds.
A special committee tasked with investigating the superintendent of streets has not yet called a meeting. A session is expected this week. Supt Brady has not commented beyond offering to meet with any city council committee. Tonight the streets committee may discuss the inquiry.
A closed electric car on the Lowell Lawrence and Haverhill line ran off the rails while crossing Central bridge toward the city at 11 30 this morning. Passenger Mary Coupe of 44 Stafford street Lawrence was thrown against the bridge supports and sank injuries feared including possible broken ribs. She is at St Johns hospital. The car sustained a damaged fender and front section with windows broken and was sent to the repair shop.
Memorial honors will be paid to the late Jeremiah Crowley by his comrades of the G A R in Memorial hall Wednesday evening at 8 oclock. The Rev John J Shaw Samuel A Chase James O Sullivan and others outside of the G A R will also speak. The meeting will be open to the public.
