The Brockton area reports a broad Lasters strike extending to most Massachusetts shoe towns. The union demanded that lasting machine firms withdraw workers from active factories or face lifting strikes. About 1600 additional workers walked out as firms paying union rates switch to hand lasting, with potential statewide and possible national spread using Consolidated and Mackay machines.
A special excursion train carrying visitors to Halifax's exhibition collided with a working train near Stellarton. Five people were killed and several injured. Notre Dame academy pupils present a program this afternoon to welcome Rev Fr Michael OBrien returning from Europe. The event features songs piano violin and an address by a pupil. The parochial school also greets Fr OBrien with songs and a hymn to St Michael. A holiday will be observed tomorrow in Fr Michael's honor.

The body of William Witherhead, a 40 year old machinist of 80 Manchester Street, was found in Chambers Street near the curb at 4.15 am. Investigators noted head injuries and a smashed derby hat, with two positive identifications after noon. An autopsy was planned for 4.30 pm with City Physician present.
Lewis G. Holt of Lawrence withdraws from the Republican nomination race leaving Hon. Wm. S. Knox favored in tonight’s caucuses. Ex-Alderman F. J. Flemings states Holt will not seek the convention but will back the Republican ticket and thanks friends for loyal support.

Sullivan was sent to the Massachusetts reform school, Grady got one year, Vaughn’s assault case continued, Whiteley sent to the state farm for six months. Rubin, found guilty of larceny, faced four new larceny charges and was bound to appear for trial in the superior court with three hundred dollars bond on the new charges and a total twelve hundred dollars.
A Chelmsford Republican caucus drew a large crowd as Lowellites pressed for a ten year district allotment revision. After a late vote and challenges, a counting oversight emerged: 80 straight ballots were forgotten, potentially swinging delegates to Shaw and Robbins by about 70. All ballots and the check list were kept.

City treasurer opened bids for the year starting Oct 1. Three bidders appeared, Appleton Bank at 2 percent, Traders Bank at 2, and Lowell Trust Company at 25. The award went to the Trust company as last year.
Superior Court in Sherman resumed the Jefferson v Richardson trial yesterday afternoon with Dr Jefferson on the stand. Dr Yorke of Boston, formerly associated with Dr Jefferson, testified briefly. The case was continued this morning for further proceedings.
A. L. Brooks Co. saw mill on the Merrimack river near North Chelmsford, now run by A. B. Woodworth, was destroyed by fire last evening. Loss estimated at 10 000 to 15 000, about 75 percent insured. The blaze began about 6 30 and consumed the mill, engine house, and planing mill, with 25 000 feet of lumber ruined. only nearby stacks were saved. Woodworth intends to rebuild. no workers could explain the outbreak. Insurance held by H. C. Church & Son.
In Lawrence Superior Court Commonwealth v Pauli Young the jury returned a verdict of not guilty after defense counsel Wim A Hogan moved, judge Lilley presiding, finding the government's evidence insufficient to sustain the indictment.
The funeral for Thomas Hagan was held Tuesday afternoon from C. H. Mellow's warerooms. Services at the grave in St. Patrick's cemetery were conducted by Rev. Fr. McHugh. Bearers included James Lynch Patrick Tennon Michael O'Donnell Michael ge Dennis Keefe and Patrick Don on.
