A Camp Meade telegram to the Associated Press from Col. Whitney declares the tale of Corp. Dyer and others riding freight cars and being sent home penniless is false. The men are deserters from Company G of the Fifth Massachusetts.
General Merrill and staff arrived from Honolulu reporting quiet conditions and public jubilation over annexation. Residents strive to model Hawaiian government on that of the United States.
Chicago dated Sept 20 reports the Woman's Christian Temperance Union failed to secure Governor Tanner or President McKinley for substituting water for wine in the battleship Illinois christening. Secretary Long also did not assist, yet the group pressed ship builders for a final effort.
St. Paul Minn Sept 20 Manager Thompson of the Ogilvie Milling Co says government crop estimates will be exceeded by 7 million bushels after a Manitoba tour. He predicts wheat crop twice last year and the greatest in western history.
In Niles Michigan on September 20 the Plainwell church social sickened nearly a tenth of the town. Fifty five people ingested canned pressed beef. twenty are seriously ill and four are reported certain to die. The incident ties to a tainted meat product and prompts police investigation and public health alerts.
Natick and Boston born Lieut. Philip Conneally of Co L Ninth Massachusetts volunteers died at Memorial hospital New London Conn from typhoid fever. He fell ill at Camp Wikoff Montauk after Santiago voyage and helped travel home before his condition worsened. Born Jan 17 1863 in Boston he later moved to Natick and worked as a plumber foreman before enlisting in Co G First Massachusetts.
Lieut. Conneally, 36, served in Co L of the Ninth Regiment from private to lieutenant, was respected for efficiency and scholarship, helped Muster Co L into regular service, and earned a civil role as inspector of plumbing and member of the board of health. He fell ill with typhoid after return from Camp Wikoff and died soon after, son of Philip Conneally of Lowell.
Dr. Fitzgerald of Boston, just back from Camp Wikoff hospitals, reports First Lieut. J. S. Gillow of Lowell doing well, Second Lieut. Philip McNulty very well, Private R. G. Crawford quite well. He plans to return today and hopes to bring most or all of the men still in hospital by Thursday night, otherwise another trip.
A pleasant gathering last Saturday at Mrs. Thomas Smith’s Gorham Street house in East Chelmsford marked the 81st birthday of Elizabeth Kelley, former Lowell resident. Four generations attended, including Edwin, Mary, granddaughter Mrs. Harry B. Shedd, and two great-grandsons. Refreshments followed in the afternoon, gifts were exchanged.
Ten Lowell cyclists joined a Sunday ride to Bellevue hotel in Mont Vernon New Hampshire. Frank E Johnson Brent Johnson Walter Coburn E E Sawyer and Fred Blanchard rode up and returned by afternoon. Mrs F E Johnson and Mrs Chase stayed at the Bellevue. Chase returned Monday and Mrs Johnson planned to return later in the week. The route is mostly good wheeling with frequent trips this season.
Mr Edward F McSweeney telegraphed the Volunteer Aid association Monday that he investigated the story in the morning papers about five Massachusetts soldiers from Camp Meade reaching New York in destitute condition and beating their way home on freight trains but he could not verify it. At each station since their return, agents from soldiers aid societies and the Red Cross have been present to watch for such cases.
The Sixth regiment sick are expected to arrive in Boston on Saturday or Sunday aboard the Bay State from Porto Rico. In other news, BE. D. Steele & Co advertise fashionable men’s suits. An engagement is announced between Miss Jennie S. Britton and William C. Gannon. Mr. and Mrs. James Rothwell greet a baby boy born Saturday. Miss Addie Overlock of North Chelmsford served as bridesmaid for William A. Kingsbury and Lugardie L. Bowen in Bangor on Monday.

Rev. O. E. Mallory of this city, formerly pastor of the Branch Street Tabernacle for 20 years, is named as the probable successor of Rev. Harlan P. Smith at Worcester's Dewey Street Baptist church. Smith resigned last spring and the church has had no pastor since. Also at Middlesex North fair, Miss Saunders exhibited corsets in the Central block.
In a Lowell police court session, Joseph Viensky, a Polish man, faced neglect of wife charges as his wife, citing fear for their baby, preferred Boston living. The judge pressed for a Lowell settlement with the family as witnesses described the couple’s dispute and the baby’s welfare amid the couple’s separation.

Michael Gilday died at his home at 32 Varney Street after a brief illness aged 72. He arose Sunday in his usual health and attended St Patrick's church. Early in the afternoon he felt dizzy and weak and a physician was summoned. In the evening he was at home.

Relapsed at 4 AM and died within ten minutes. Gilday, long employed at Lowell Machine Shop foundry, lived in retirement 20 years. A devout Catholic at St. Patrick's parish, he left a wife and large family including Rev John Gilday, Rev James Gilday, Charles, Henry, Frank, Owen, Thomas, Nellie, and Mary plus Kate. Also included is the death of Mrs. Clarissa Maxfield at 63 Canton Street aged 86 years 10 months with three children named Charles Parker Stephen Maxfield Nellie A. Maxfield. Wilbert R Alden, son of William H Alden, died in New Salem Sept 16 aged three. body brought to Lowell for burial in Edson cemetery by J B Currier.
The funeral of Mrs Anne Maguire wife of Philip Maguire was held yesterday morning from 344 Fletcher street A requiem mass was said at St Patrick's church at 9 o'clock with music by E F Faulkner The bearers were Patrick Shalvey James Shalvey Owen Riley and Cormack McIntyre burial followed in the Catholic cemetery The funeral of Mrs Elizabeth Schoffield of South Boston was held Monday at 1 45 p m at Edson cemetery chapel Rev Thomas Haworth conducted services with many Lowell friends in attendance
