President Roosevelt departed Oyster Bay for New York at 9 30 am aboard the Sylph and will not return to Sagamore Hill until October 9. Mrs Roosevelt and two Miss Roosevelts traveled with him while the rest of the party, including Cortelyou, left at 9 30 am on a special train to meet him in Jersey City for the western journey beginning at 2 14 pm over the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Haugesund Norway Sept 19 The Arctic steamer Fram homeward bound with the Sverdrup expedition on board passed Utsiro and took a pilot. Capt Sverdrup who led Fram during Nansen's 1895 polar voyage sailed June 24 1898 from Christiana for Arctic regions. Norwegian government owns Fram and aided the voyage with funds. Crew includes Lieut Bau mann astronomer Lieut Ysachsen cartographer Dr Svendsen meteorologist Dr Edy Bay zoologist Dr Herman Simmons botanist Dr P Schel geologist and nine seamen.
From Lucerne Switzerland Sept 19 a Times report on Lord Salisbury health states he is confined to his room by a chill and a mild gout attack. Travel probably impossible for a fortnight though no cause for anxiety is cited. Lucerne newspaper note adds no further risk to his condition.
Belfast reports Sir Thomas Lipton arrived aboard the Erin at Bangor to meet Royal Ulster Yacht Club officials. He will dispatch his challenge for another America's Cup series through the club, with a new barber shop noted in Merrimack square near Boston and Lowell Railroad building.
Warren Jackson, 50, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, died in Washington after drinking an ounce of aconite mistaken for rhubarb at the store of James L. Burns in Rockland, Maine. Jackson, returning from a family reunion with Abel Jackson, managed to ask if it was rhubarb before dying fifteen minutes later. Burns, a prominent Washington dealer with a $100,000 estate, faces an inquest ordered by County Attorney Howard as Coroner Judkins and an Augusta coroner are arranged.
Detectives in New York and New Jersey investigate the death of Mrs. Joseph Pulitzer whose nude body was found in the Morris canal near Jersey City. The husband, a New York tailor, is detained. police suspect murder and believe the body was moved from New York to New Jersey.
In Des Moines on September 18 the sovereign grand lodge voted 146 to 36 to repeal the Indianapolis adopted amendment admitting members of mixed Indian and white blood. Opponents warned it could lead to admitting negro membership. R M Shanks of Manitoba reported the insurance dispute between Grand Sir Cable and Past Grand Sir Pinkerton was settled to the satisfaction of the brothers.
In Winthrop the Conry and Kelcher factions battled during a district caucus. Chief McNeil tried to calm the crowd but skirmishing continued for over an hour. No blows, but a man was pulled from a table amid jostling. each side chose delegates, Kelcher outside.
Victoria B C Sept 19 The cable steamer Colonia has landed the line and paid out cable at Bamfield Creek en route to Fanning Island on a long voyage commemorating the Pacific cable project.
Washington dispatch reports the appointment of fourth class postmaster for Monmouth Maine Charles W Prescott effective today. The selection fills a local position in the postal service and aligns with standard government staffing.
Two killed and 44 injured when Baltimore and Ohio train No. 2 the Charming Blue flyer derailed at Leesburg Ohio after striking an open switch. Engineers Philip Roe and Charles Studer died on site. Among the injured are Mrs John Sellers Miss Sylvester Mabel Warner and Henry Greenbaum. General Manager Ira G Rawn led rescue and arrangements for treatment. The cause remains under investigation.

Turin on September 19 Wm Marconi presented plans with Signor Galimberti for a wireless telegraph station costing 140000 dollars to link Italy with British and American stations. The plan will go to Parliament. King Victor Emmanuel awarded Marconi the cross of the order of the crown.
Massachusetts increase and re-issue affect pensions for named recipients. Charles A. Chase of Swampscott receives 8 dollars, James H. Howland of Whitman 12, Franklin Fremont of Lynn 8, Lewis E. Pemberton of Lynn 8, William H. Ellison of Haverhill 17, widow and dependent relatives Emeline A. Chandler of Avon 12, and Ione Keene of Stoneham 8.
Rev. John EF Delaney of this city serves as chaplain for the Sisters of the Precious Blood in Manchester New Hampshire. He will lead 11 sisters to Havana next week to open a house there. Fr Delaney will stay in Cuba for about ten days.
New York dispatch says the steamer City of Para arrived from Panama with Capt. J. C. Moon aboard. The captain claimed the rebel gunboat Boyaca stopped and searched the vessel despite protests. Moon will report to the British consul. Rebels suspected arms shipment from Valparaiso to the Colombian government.
